Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.

Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the option to question certain calls from the chair umpire, echoing the practice already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which terminated the longstanding role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there is no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Case in Point

An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
