The Journey of a Cult can be defined by specific steps.

1. The Grand Vision

A dominant personality or figureheads introduce a revolutionary approach that promises a cure for alienated and vulnerable people.

So here we are. Plans are in motion to challenge the establishment overseas. Tensions are rising. Signs of trouble appear from the out-houses. One individual, vulnerable, nervous, the slogan POSITIVE INTENT smeared across his chest in chicken blood, has stumbled into view and is taken aside in secrecy towards an inconclusive loan stint in county cricket.

Remember the early days, when the world was still young? The initial phase, of uninhibited aggression.

2. The Honeymoon Phase

Cult leaders offer a fresh beginning, optimism ahead, support, salvation within a community with shared faith in the philosophy.

What was this thing initially? Players celebrating feeling good. Ink. Muscles. Determination. Elite male wellness energy. Admittedly, The squad insist Bazball doesn’t actually exist, ironically because if it doesn’t exist, what exactly did I just watch?

Yet it’s clear what it is. It’s the player executing a stroke so unconventional it defies description. It’s the thrill of Ben Stokes in his final form, a look that says: focused titan, beard made of wood, hair woven from beaver hide, truly contemporary you wouldn’t be surprised to notice and find him positioned at mid-off shirtless embracing nature.

It’s the batsman often seen addressing the media, appearing as a happy little woodland creature smartly dressed, saying stuff like we are actively deconstructing the orange. Indeed, the energy, initially, was uplifting.

3. A New Life

Development stage. Cohesion maintained by rote learning of mantras. These ideas may seem irrational to prove commitment.

Does anyone else feel? The backlash, the fury, the disappointment following the initial loss feels overblown, unwarranted. England batted badly in Perth, as they often do in Australia. In trying to escape from it, to foster positivity, they are mirroring their own experience, building another enclosure, a closed circle, however with a new team and a mentor encouraging individuality as long as yourself is quite a lot like myself.
