Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when dozens of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and near the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons containing numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that these practices become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
