The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several fascinating upcoming titles, but one in particular has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"It's a unique experience where a young woman containing multiple personalities within her needs to flee from a maze of the mind," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her reside four distinct souls, all possessing their own anxieties and drives. These entities can take over spontaneously, unleashing their innermost terrors upon her suddenly.
Based on revealed footage, much of the narrative takes place within a eerie medical facility, while additional clips depict the main character navigating a desolate church.
"What are you fearful of? What makes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Things that seem trivial to others can activate a deep instinct within us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are unique to each person."
The core mechanic involves controlling the persona that surfaces at any given moment. However, these identities will change involuntarily during gameplay. During exploration, each soul's fears become amplified and attack the protagonist one after another. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player experiences.
Initially, UN:Me shares striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with orderlies who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide smiles. Figures in the lobby have enormous flowers growing from their heads are. Flowers are a recurring theme, contrasting organic elegance with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the souls claims that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a creator. "During the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
Once players have deduced a persona is fake, they must eliminate it. But, because every entity can lie or hide the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The last one remaining might be a fake. Either way, your choices are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is can be follow on platforms.
