During the fall season, Adult Swim welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the network launched a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, evoking a animated take of a contemplative talk show. In an era often characterized by cynicism, this show's sincerity found an audience and helped it become a breakout hit.
In mid-December, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three respectful teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.
"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and helped it grow," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."
The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and supported its peculiarly charming style.
"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about watching this charming family navigate their daily lives.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing layer of irony. He attributed this trend to a broader media landscape.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to bask in the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
