The Gunners' Disputed Partnership Agreement with Visit Rwanda Is Ending In the Upcoming Season

Arsenal Football Club has declared that its much-debated sponsorship arrangement with Visit Rwanda will terminate in June this upcoming year.

Background and Scrutiny

This deal, reportedly valued at around ten million pounds each year, began in 2018 and has since been heavily criticized.

This criticism stems from accusations of Rwandan assistance for the M23 forces in continuing hostilities in the eastern part of the bordering Congo.

In February, Arsenal faced allegations of committing a disrespectful act to the Congolese government by declining to meet with the DRC's foreign minister to address the sponsorship.

Partnership Structure and Objectives

Visit Rwanda serves as a division of the Rwanda's development authority, which is a government department.

It is widely believed that Arsenal entered into and upheld this partnership mainly to grow their fanbase in Africa.

However, the deal has now ended after both parties “mutually agreed” to part ways.

“Collaboratively, Arsenal and the Rwanda Development Board have surpassed the original goals of the partnership – advocating preservation and responsible tourism, motivating countless fans to visit the nation, and establishing a durable base for visitor increase,” stated an official Arsenal statement.

The statement continued that the partnership has also assisted Rwanda's goal of becoming an global sports center in Africa and host more global sporting events while delivering local football projects that have assisted numerous youth athletes and coaches develop their skills and encourage more involvement in sport across the country.

Leadership View and Supporter Response

Richard Garlick, Arsenal's top executive, characterized the deal as a “major expedition” and asserted it had been “driving forward” the club's aspirations.

Yet this view was contested by a section of Arsenal's fanbase, with the activist organization Arsenal Peace Advocates demonstrating outside the club's home ground during the first semi-final encounter in Europe's premier competition against Paris Saint-Germain in April's conclusion.

Demonstrators showed a sign stating “Terminate the Visit Rwanda Partnership” and provided wristbands to cover up the Rwanda branding on kits.

Wider Landscape and Additional Teams

In the same month, the French champions extended their sponsorship arrangement with Visit Rwanda through 2028.

Simultaneously, Atlético Madrid inked a recent contract for the equivalent timeframe that has resulted in the branding featured on the Spanish club's male and female kits.
