Over a long period, the Kremlin and the country's pop-culture machine have worked together to forge a tailor-made version of Putin. This figure is a political superhero devoid of flaws, an ex-intelligence officer reimagined as a local 007 who always knows more than he reveals.

One recent example is a television show launched last October, directed by a pro-government filmmaker. International depictions frequently result in reinforcing this same narrative rather than undercutting it. An adaptation inspired by a bestselling satirical novel sets out to subvert the Putin cult by presenting him not as a cause but as a symptom, moving the narrative weight to the political machinery surrounding him.

The Fable of the Hesitant President

On screen, Putin is shown as having been chosen by powerful oligarchs to stabilise the country because he is “young, athletic and a spy”. They visit him and all but beg him to take the top job. He replies is that he would prefer to rule from the background, seeking permanent power.
