New York City's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to take up residence in the iconic Gracie Mansion, departing from the rent-stabilised apartment that became a focal point in his run for office.
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for most New York City mayors after the World War II era.
But, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a core issue, hesitated to declare his residency plans promptly following his triumph in November.
"This decision rested on our family's safety and the imperative to directing my full attention on implementing the affordability agenda voters supported," Mamdani said on Monday.
Mamdani lived in the Queens borough of Astoria, an area renowned for its abundance of immigrant communities and international dining.
"To Astoria: thank you for demonstrating the true spirit of New York City," he expressed.
"Although my address will change in the neighborhood, Astoria will always live within me and the work I do," he affirmed.
In his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his central policy – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.
Yet his critics, mainly one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for occupying the apartment despite the fact that he came from a famous family.
Some mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his three terms, which concluded in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg argued it ought to be a venue for civic gatherings, and championed a major refurbishment of the older mansion.
As he settles into Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will find himself in surroundings very different than his previous Astoria digs.
Adorned in butter yellow paint, emerald shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure with views of the East River.
Internally, the ground floor of the Federal-style mansion is appointed consistent with the home's historical period.
The property, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also includes enhanced security to protect the mayor and his family.
Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors occasionally opened and closed by themselves, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "It doesn't matter the skeptics say," he insisted in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
His former home is rent-stabilized, meaning the city imposes caps on how much property owners can raise the rent each year.
City residents view rent-stabilized housing as essential protections as the housing expenses outpaces what many can afford.
Data indicated Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from the real estate platform Zillow, the median rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
