New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will recover well after being shot in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during a recent discussion.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn commented. “His family, they are doing well and he will walk away from this just fine.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the hospital, where his condition is described as critical but stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” Glenn remarked. “However, I can share, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. And again, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and his words reflect that optimism.”
New York police shared security footage earlier this week of a man sought in the attack on the player. What prompted the attack is currently under review and police mentioned it remains uncertain if Boyd was the intended victim. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.
The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday morning about halfway between the famous arena and the iconic square. Boyd, 29, was transported to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has been on his mind “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his wife just had a newborn.
“The first thing I thought about, he just had a kid,” Glenn said. “And I’m thinking about his wife, considering his child and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“There’s a process to this, that I won’t detail, but It is reassuring that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd was inactive this season, after joining the team, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on 18 August with a shoulder issue that required surgery.
He joined the Jets as a free agent in March and was expected to be an important component of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a practice session on August 2 and had to be helped off.
Boyd continued to be present all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad after that. Boyd inked a single-season agreement for $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
