As he approaches his half-decade plus one year at the helm, Mikel Arteta has admitted that his future at Arsenal is directly connected to achieving success.
Arteta took over on December 20th, 2019 and soon guided the team to an FA Cup triumph a short time later. However, that initial silverware stands as his lone significant piece of silverware since succeeding Unai Emery.
“Yes,” he stated in response to a query about staying beyond 2027. “Yet it's about today. And many things have to happen in the near future as well to deserve that opportunity.”
Saturday night brings the six-year milestone with a fixture against Everton, the very same club Arsenal played immediately following his appointment was announced.
Given that chasing Manchester City playing against West Ham in an earlier kick-off, Arsenal could be displaced the summit in the Premier League for the first time. This comes notwithstanding Arteta presiding over a squad that has been plagued by more than a century of fitness issues from the beginning of last season.
Arteta is tied down by 18 months remaining on the deal he signed in 2024, yet understands fully that success is required in the immediate future.
He went on to explain, emphasizing the daily requirement to prove his worth. “I think a manager has to earn the right to be here tomorrow. And that depends on how you react, how you talk here, how you go into the dressing room, the signal you send.”
Arteta continued, expressing gratitude for the consistent faith from the board and owners, while singling out the squad's dedication as paramount. “In the final analysis, the most important ones are those players... Over this half-decade, I’ve seen just players with a standard of focus, desire to learn and dedicate themselves to the team.”
The squad heads into the upcoming game coping with yet another injury. Defender Ben White has been sidelined with a muscle problem that is likely to sideline him for a few weeks.
Even with the availability issues and the high-stakes environment, Arteta is confident the club's “objectives and communication” are vastly different from when he initially took over.
Arteta highlighted the team's performances as a sign they are nearing their goal. “Consider the performances, all the records that we... were breaking... We still have yet to do that [win trophies]. But that tells you the level we are at.”
Arteta concluded, “That is a level that the Premier League has never experienced in the past. And our ambition is to achieve even higher goals. And if we do that, I think we are on the right path to winning.”
