The Lakers star knew his historic streak of putting up 10+ points was at risk. At the decisive instant, however, he wasn't bothered.
The right decision meant distributing the ball – and he executed. Consequently, the legendary streak was over.
LeBron's astounding streak of 1,297 consecutive regular-season outings scoring at least ten ended this past Thursday, when the NBA's all-time scoring leader was limited to eight points in the Los Angeles Lakers' close triumph versus Toronto. He provided the decisive pass, feeding teammate Rui Hachimura to knock down a three-point shot at the buzzer.
“Zero,” James stated when asked about the streak ending. “We won.”
He might have attempted to win the contest – and preserved his record – with the last shot, yet he opted to make the extra pass to Rui in the left corner. Hachimura sank it, and James raised his arms with his hands in the air.
“Just playing basketball the proper way. Always make the smart play,” James noted. That has always been how I operate. That is the way I learned the game. I’ve done that for two decades.”
James is acutely aware of his point total he's scored at any point,” stated the team's head coach the coach. “He did it like he’s done throughout his career.”
LeBron checked back into the floor one last time with under five and a half minutes to go, the outcome along with the historic run up for grabs. His tally was a mere six points from 3-of-15 shooting at that juncture.
He scored with 1:46 left to tie the game and missed a mid-range jumper with one minute to go which could have taken him to double digits.
He didn’t take a subsequent shot – but could have. A teammate found him in the waning seconds, however, James opted to dish it off instead of shooting.
The basketball deities, if you do it the proper way, they often repay you,” Redick stated.
James's streak started back in January 2007. It stood as the most extended double-digit streak in professional basketball: Michael Jordan previously held a streak of 866 straight games with 10+ points, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar had 787, and Karl Malone had the fourth-longest run of 575 games.
He is such a pass-first superstar,” noted teammate Jake LaRavia.
He focuses on playing the sport. The chance was there but because of his nature as a player and his character as an individual, he made the pass, passed it to Rui and claimed the victory.”
Reaching double digits was usually a formality early in the final period. Over the course of the record, he had achieved double figures by the beginning of the final quarter 1,266 times coming into the contest.
But two of those rare games below ten points through three quarters had happened just days before: He had nine points entering the final quarter against Dallas last week, followed by six points before the fourth quarter against Phoenix on Monday night.
James managed to preserve the record in the Phoenix game. The very next outing, it finished – and he celebrated anyway.
I only ever make the best play. That is instinctive, regardless of outcome,” James said. If you make the right play, the basketball gods are always returning the favor.”
