Rúben Neves saved the day for the Portuguese side with a last-gasp decisive strike in their World Cup encounter against Ireland, after Caoimhín Kelleher had kept out a penalty from the veteran forward.
Neves found the net during added time to claim a slender victory, four years after Ronaldo had bagged a brace at the death to overcome a stubborn Irish side.
The Irish squad appeared poised to leave Lisbon with a well-earned draw, but ultimately left empty-handed, despite restoring a significant amount of pride with a battling performance that overshadowed some of the memories of last month’s embarrassing loss in Armenia.
However, the loss leaves them staring down the barrel, with their initial trio of qualifying group games having yielded only a solitary point. They need to beat Armenia in Dublin on Tuesday to keep alive any hope of claiming a qualifying place.
Hungary enhanced their chances of qualifying by picking up their initial victory with a 2-0 triumph over the Armenian side, climbing above their rivals into second place behind Portugal in Group F. Daniel Lukacs gave Hungary the advantage in the opening period and Zsombor Gruber made sure of the victory in late stoppage time.
Serbia suffered a 1-0 loss at home to Albania, with the result meaning England can now seal their passage from Group K by beating Latvia on Tuesday. An Albanian striker netted the decisive strike for Albania with a well-taken shot in first-half stoppage time.
The Latvian side difficulties in Group K persisted as they were forced to a two-all draw at home by Andorra. An Andorran player scored for the visitors late on from time to claim them their initial draw of the qualifying campaign and prolong Latvia’s winless run to several matches.
The Spanish national team maintained their impressive qualifying group run with a 2-0 win over Georgia after strikes from Jéremy Pino and his teammate in the match venue. The result extended the title holders’ perfect run in qualifying, having notched 11 goals in three matches without letting in a goal.
Despite the absence of players such as a talented winger, Nico Williams, and the midfield anchor due to fitness issues, Luis de la Fuente’s side showcased their superiority against a Georgia team that spent the majority of the game defending deep. The home side controlled the encounter with more than 80% possession, and Georgia did not have a single attempt on target or generate a clear chance, with only goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili preventing a rout.
Pino broke the deadlock in the first half from a well-executed dead-ball routine, and his compatriot wrapped up the win in the second period with a spectacular free kick after Mamardashvili had denied Ferran Torres’s spot-kick.
Gennaro Gattuso commented: “We’re not thinking about the group leaders or Israel. We are aware of our responsibilities.”
Italy missed out for the previous two global tournaments, twice missing out in the qualifying rounds, and the feared backdoor route now looks their primary chance after Norway’s comprehensive win over the Israeli side in their qualifying group. Norway are leading on 18 points from six matches. The Italians have twelve points with a game in hand on their rivals and are three points clear of their next opponents. The Estonian squad stay in fourth place on three points. The top teams advance automatically for the World Cup, with the second-placed sides going into the qualifying stage.
Italy face their rivals on Tuesday, where a win would cement second spot and, while they can still theoretically overtake the group leaders on the table, the leaders’ much better goal difference means a playoff spot probably awaits for Gennaro Gattuso’s side.
