Gareth Southgate Reveals Direction on Mentoring Young People Over Club Management

Gareth Southgate has stated that he is avoiding a return to football management, noting that it would be challenging to recreate the unique sense of purpose he encountered as the national team coach.

He suggested his plan to channel his attention toward working with the youth and addressing what he called a dominant downbeat story now existing in the country.

Embracing Different Paths Beyond Football

During a broadcast discussion, the manager was asked about talk linking him with open coaching positions in the top flight and other leagues.

“My role with England was not just a job—it was a mission representing my nation,” he answered. “That’s going to be very hard to replicate. Having had 37 years in football I’m enjoying finding other areas where I think I might be able to make a difference.”

A Passion for Role Models

Leading up to the release of his new title, his leadership-focused book, the author shared that he is highly enthusiastic about setting examples for young people, applying experiences from his time as head coach of the national side between 2016 and 2024, as well as his experiences as a parent.

The leader believes that his time coaching England, during which the team evolved from being deeply unpopular to widely supported, holds broader applications.

“At the beginning, there was a major gap between the team and the fans,” he said. “The public viewed the players as egotistical, yet we successfully reversed that image. The squad’s ability to connect diverse communities was truly powerful.”

Raising Children and Shaping the Next Generation

Reflecting on his role as a parent, Southgate commented: “Every parent aims to provide a solid foundation, yet there comes a time when children stop heeding parental advice. I’ve faced this at home, just like others, and I believe this area is critically important.”

He added: “There’s a negative narrative around our country at the moment and we’ve got to give young people hope, we’ve got to give them guidance. We’ve got incredible talent but we need to them to find the right role models, the right friendship groups because those decisions have such a big impact on the rest of their lives.”

Togetherness Beyond Discord

The former manager asserted that “there is more that unites us [in the UK] than divides us” but that the societal attention often centers on division.

“It’s understandable why people are disaffected,” he stated. “Economically lots of places are in tough situations now and that’s going to prompt desires for change. But I have seen the ability to unite the country. I saw during Covid people doing shopping for the neighbours and that’s when we as a nation are at our best, when we’ve been pushed into a corner and come out and shown resilience.”

Southgate’s forthcoming book, titled Dear England, is expected to provide additional perspectives on management and country pride drawn from his remarkable professional journey.
