Colombian President Warns 'I Shall Return to Arms Once More' should American Forces Launches an Attack.

The US President and President Gustavo Petro have turned up the rhetoric of their exchange, heightening strains in their relations following US forces targeted Venezuela in an operation to oust Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro from power.

"He operates drug factories and processing labs and his time is running out," the US president stated.

Rising Rhetoric coupled with Claims

Talking to the press over the weekend, the American leader hinted at analogous armed intervention towards the South American nation, asserting the nation is also "very ill" and governed by an unwell individual involved in producing cocaine and trafficking it to America."

While Colombia stands as the world’s largest producer of cocaine, authorities have found no indication that President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is directly connected to the illicit industry.

A Deteriorating Relationship

This nation has long been a staunch collaborator of the US in the struggle against drug trafficking and received wide political approval from American politicians, yet ties have deteriorated markedly following Trump was elected.

Its narcotics trade is largely controlled by guerrilla factions including one major cartel, another leftist insurgency and dissident factions of the demobilized Farc, a large contingent of whom demobilised subsequent to a 2016 peace deal.

Colombia's Defiant Response

Upon being questioned if a military operation comparable to Venezuela was a possibility regarding Colombia, Trump said: "I like the sound of that to me."

Petro, once a member of a left-wing insurgent group who disarmed in the last century, categorically refuted these allegations. "I am no illegitimate and I am not a drug trafficker," he declared.

"The US president speaks uninformed. End the false accusations," he wrote online.

"If they [the US] bomb peasants, they will transform into numerous insurgents in the hills. If they capture the nation's leader, whom a significant portion of the country admires and supports, they will release the ‘jaguar’ of the people," the president cautioned.

From Fighter to Statesman

He passed some years as a young man as a member with the radical M-19 insurgent movement though it is believed that he never participated in combat. Following his disarmament, he took part in creating a new constitution over three decades ago subsequently becoming a prominent senator. He held the office of mayor of the Colombian capital prior to his election president.

"I pledged to abstain from using a weapon again ... but in defense of my country I would take up weapons once more," he affirmed.

Reinforced Protection and Widespread Rejection

Colombia's defense chief reported that the national leader's protection team had received additional support.

Many among Colombia’s conservative opposition have expressed support with Trump, yet figures from all sides of Colombian politics have rejected the possibility of an invasion against their nation.

Diplomatic and Economic Strains

The US withdrew his travel authorization after he encouraged American soldiers to ignore unlawful commands. In October, authorities imposed financial sanctions on Petro, his wife and several close collaborators.

At the same time while America bolstered its military presence near Venezuela and bombing vessels thought to carry drugs to put pressure on Venezuela’s Maduro, American military assets executed operations on boats off the Pacific coast adjacent to Colombia.
